Breaking News! Columbus is a Fraud!
New discovery (well actually kinda old) that Columbus was actually NOT the first individual to discover America. New controversies have been aroused around the fact that Native Americans had established their societies in the western land long before Columbus. So why does Columbus get an entire day dedicated to him for an exploration that he kinda sorta stole from someone else? In all honesty, Columbus day is a relic of an outdated and oversimplified version of history and is an event that should be left in the past! Native Americans do not receive the credit they deserve for their establishment and accomplishments in the new world. They were discriminated against and seen as less than simply because of their race or the fact that they just operated in a different way than Columbus did (this seems way too familiar :/). So many events in history have repeated to be similar to this, a white male comes and dominates another race they feel superior towards. Columbus set an example and started a trend of segregation and halted the creation of the infamous melting pot. He normalized the abuse and separation of minority groups and created a dispute that would last for centuries. Columbus wanted to separate the Native Americans and keep them out of his society. Today, the United States president petitioned to build a wall to physically keep Mexican immigrants out of the country. Now, I know these aren't the same thing, but, hundreds of years later, can you see the connection? Columbus should not be praised for his exploration and the negative actions that followed. I do agree that he promoted outward expansion and open-minded thinking, but that could be celebrated on its own. Native Americans are the true heroes: the ones who built a society from nothing, explored the land, and created their own civilization. They are the ones who spread a positive message and who, in my opinion, should be celebrated nationwide.

I love your light-hearted sense of humor and commentary! Do you believe the whole holiday should be switched from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples day, or should it be split?

ReplyDeleteI liked reading your post because of the consistent presence of humor within your writing. I thought it was smart and effective that you compared things Christopher Columbus did to things we do during this time period. Additionally, I share the same views on this particular subject, which made it easier to connect to my individual thoughts and beliefs. It was important that you stressed the fact that Native Americans were responsible for how the Europeans found this land, and you successfully portrayed your knowledge about the topic.
