The Boston Marathon, The United States' Marathon

On April 15, 2013, there was a terrorist bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts. Three people killed. 16 limbs lost. Several hundred injured. The entire city of Boston experienced an extreme devastation and the fear from the entire country was heightened. Yet, the following year, 36,000 people ran in the race and one million individuals were expected to witness the 2014 Boston Marathon. This is almost double what is expected on a typical year. The country as a whole was ready to support the city and the unity of the people was represented as they expressed their patriotism and their "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" (Jefferson 2). The runners were able to rely on the immense amount of support rather than the fear from the previous event. Overall, despite all the negativity and hatred that is consistently present in our country, Americans can always rely on each other and the combined strive for freedom and liberty. Americans are characterized by their support for each other and by their pursuit for the general happiness of the nation. When needed, Americans are able to unite and express the original ideals of our country or community and is often able to outshine the negativity that is present in the entire world.

  1. You have good understanding of american pride. The way the you connected a event to your perspective demonstrates your acknowledgement about America. I felt as if there could have been more of explanation. Also connect not to one event but even more broader events.

  2. I think this was a very interesting way to display how Americans achieve freedom and liberty. Using a real example of tragedy to show how liberty was achieved was very effective! I would like to see further analysis on the topic and maybe other examples of this being demonstrated, maybe not even in America. It was overall a very interesting piece!
